cotton, silk, etching ink, printed, machine pieced, hand quilted and embroidered, 75 x 75 inches, 1990
A story quilt about the isolation of living in Northern Ontario before the internet. Quilts allow for an abstraction of the reality of long and wide snowy winters as well as the beauty of wildflowers and an appreciation of the sky. The four places where I had lived between birth and age 40 are embroidered in white thread, all of them in North Western Ontario. Fort Frances, Rainy River, Thunder Bay, and Kenora.
The self portrait, at age 38, was printed with a press onto the silk.
