self portrait

front

hand painted cotton, maternity clothing, machine pieced, hand quilted, 45 x 42 inches, 1985.

Made after the birth of the artist's third child, a daughter, this is a self portrait of Judy Martin breastfeeding her baby while at the same time, drawing this portrait.

This quilt has been shown many times in group and solo exhibitions, and was part of Martin's trunk show for many years when she spoke to quilt guilds across Canada.

Judy Martin's Self Portrait quilt was used as the cover image of Mothers and Sons, the spring/summer 2000 issue of the Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering edited by Andrea O'Reilly and published by York University, Toronto, Canada..

Self Portrait is pictured (page 103) in the SAQA publication Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 years of Innovation, various authors, edited by Sandra Sider 2018..
